Porsche 911 High Performance Front Control Arm Bushes
The steering and handling all most Porsche 911s can be improved by modifying the material used for the bushes which locate the front control arms. By reducing the compliance of the material used for these bushes steering alignment will be maintained to a greater degree even when the vehicle is subjected to very high levels of cornering force. The characteristics and properties of the material selected for these bushes is important in terms of handling, ride and durability.
We have selected Ticona GUR 4150 which is an extremely High Molecular Weight PE which has several unique properties including superior abrasion resistance and impact strength. It’s other outstanding properties include a low coefficient of friction that results in self-lubricating, non-stick surfaces which eliminates the need for lubrication and completely avoids the use of grease This material is also virtually impervious to water absorption with absorption and volume swelling being lower than that found in both PU and Delrin. This material maintains impact strength down to Liquid Helium Temperatures and is significantly more compliant than many other polymer materials such as POM or Delrin, which helps in terms of NVH although some reduction in vibration isolation may occur.
The bushes are designed to fit into the standard control arm bush housings with a slight interference. This interference prevents the bush from rotating in the housing.
A ‘steel sleeve’ to ensure the surface quality of the control arm is also supplied and this sleeve provides the surface for the rotation of the bush. The sleeve is manufactured from a T45 High Strength Steel which has been Electroless Nickel Plated and subsequently heat treated. This process provides a surface which is both wear and corrosion resistant.
